السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
1. The prevailing opinion among scholars, including those of the Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hambali schools of jurisprudence, is that it is recommended to perform the nikah in a Masjid. Some Maliki scholars also support this majority view.
2. This majority based their view on both reasoning and textual proofs. According to their reasoning, the marriage contract is considered an act of worship, and Masajid are designated places of worship. Textual evidences supporting this include:
2.1. A’ishah رضي الله عنها narrated from the Messenger of Allah said, “Announce this marriage, have it in the masjid, and beat the drums.” Narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi with a sound chain of transmission.
2.2. Imam Bukhari narrates that a lady entered the Masjid, offering herself in marriage to the Prophet of Allah . The Prophet advised that he had no interest in marriage. Subsequently, one of the companions stepped forward and said, “Marry her to me, O Messenger of Allah.” The Messenger eventually married her off the companion. All of this took place in the Masjid.
