1. To answer your question accurately, we have had to ascertain the true nature of hypnotherapy, how it is performed, and the manner in which it takes effect. Our research has revealed that there is no standard definition of hypnotherapy or an agreed-upon mechanism by which the hypnotherapist can effect treatment.
2. The general consensus about hypnotherapy is that it creates a state where the individual affected is susceptible to suggestion. We will summarize the different types of hypnotherapy or hypnosis being practiced and their related rulings:
2.1. Hypnotherapy: This involves the use of certain words or phrases to create a heightened sense of attention while the participant is fully aware, with no loss of memory or control over their actions. In this setting, it would be permissible with three conditions:
2.1.1. The therapist’s intent is medical treatment and not harm.
2.1.2. The content of these words or phrases is permissible, such as verses of the Quran or simple permissible speech.
2.1.3. There are no beliefs of cause and effect that contradict Islamic beliefs.
2.2. Hypnosis: this is the form of hypnosis where the individual appears to be almost controlled by the hypnosis practitioner, doing things they do not recall or would not ordinarily do whilst alert; or there is an impaired level of consciousness or decision making. This is categorically impermissible.
